If you’ve seen the debate on social media about if you should wash meat or not, we talked to a local expert for answers.
Environmental Health Director Justin Smith says you shouldn’t wash meat because it doesn’t remove organisms that cause diseases.
Instead, it does the opposite. Washing could spread those organisms to other surfaces like countertops and faucet handles.
“During the washing, water splashes and sprays in different directions,” Smith said. “That water is carrying the pathogens that were on the surface on the meat, and it’s placing it on the other surfaces in the kitchen.”
According to Smith, the best way to kill the organisms is by cooking the meat thoroughly.
